For me, together with Mahler’s 6th symphony, the 10th is his most personal piece. This is a work written under tremendous stress, where the problems with his marriage were increasing and his health was failing. He never intended to write more than nine symphonies, having dedicated No 8 to his wife, Alma, In effect his last three symphonies were ‘Das Lied von der Erde’, No 9 and No 10. A deeply superstitious man, he wanted to break the jinx of only composing nine symphonies, so he started the 10th, even though they were only sketches. The discovery of Alma’s affair with Gropius so shocked him that the 10th symphony became deeply personal, and he subsequently became sick and died.
One would not want to be without this piece, and it is important no matter who finished it in order to understand where Mahler was in his life. Although this is a controversial choice, I have chosen the Carpenter version because I think it may be the closest to what Mahler wanted. He often quotes Mahler from the other symphonies. Also there are very few recordings of this version, which in itself is interesting.
To be without Mahler’s 10th symphony would be unfortunate.
