And he has survived! 'Quite an ordeal for an old man', he says. Not that you would notice as he rushes off the next day to rehearsals at the Zurich Opera where, in March he will make his debut, conducting a new production of Offenbach's masterpiece, 'The Tales of Hoffmann'. Mahler's symphony No 8 is due for release this Spring. Next season a box set of the complete cycle will be available and in time for the 2010/11 Mahler celebrations. Other fascinating concerts being given by the Tonhalle Orchestra and David Zinman will be performances of the music specially written for the silent film of Richard Strauss' opera, 'Der Rosenkavalier' completed in 1926. The film follows the story of the opera's libretto, and although unsung there is music written for each scene. There will be a screen with the film being shown at the back of the stage in the Tonhalle, shown at the same time as the orchestra plays continuously for 148 minutes. Not to be missed!
The wonderful German violinist, Frank Peter Zimmermann will join David Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra to play Dvorak's sublime violin concerto. This will be followed by the symphony No 7 also by Dvorak. To start the concert the orchestra will play Dvorak's Carnival Overture.
