Having read the recent article in your newspaper, I feel it is time to make a statement. For the past twelve years of my life my greatest joy has been the summers in Aspen. The interaction with students, faculty, Board Members, staff and public was like none other. Everything concerning my work with the young students far outweighed the concerts I gave, even in the major cities around the world. The Conducting Academy has been like raising a child and watching it grow in strength and ability. When I first came here to work with Robert Harth, we worked and planned for the future of the Festival in harmony and excitement. Nothing seemed impossible, and indeed nothing was for him. His vision coincided with mine, and it was and always would be about the education of young musicians first and foremost. The faculty and staff of this Festival were here solely for that purpose, and with the good will of the board we would achieve this. For some time I have felt that Mr. Fletcher’s vision for the Festival was no longer the same as mine. It would be hypocritical of me to leave the impression that our relationship was problem free. Mr. Fletcher was more than aware of our inability to work together. I have made it clear that I felt strongly that my opinions no longer mattered nor were they seriously considered. I do not wish to go on with the many differences between Mr. Fletcher and myself as it would serve no purpose at this stage but, suffice it to say, I find myself unable to continue to work in an atmosphere of tension, uncertainty and disrespect. I thank you for sharing so warmly, my vision for the Aspen Festival over the past years. Change can be refreshing if it is achieved with respect for what has gone before. It is and always has been the ethos of the Festival that the students come first in Aspen. You have here a Faculty strongly dedicated to achieving that aim. This Faculty should be treated with the greatest respect and not lightly dismissed. Famous soloists and conductors come and go, but what a young student experiences in Aspen will last a lifetime. Some will perform and others will go on to be the audiences of the future. It is not important which road they will choose, but how they experience the journey . A music director, a CEO, Board Members, Faculty and Staff are all dispensable, but what is indispensable is the message we send the young students under our care. I leave knowing that I have given myself totally, body mind and spirit to the Aspen Festival for the past twelve years My conducting students are already achieving great success throughout the world. I have been very fortunate to have Mr. Murry Sidlin as my Associate in ACCA , and we have developed a program which I believe is unique. The applications for the AACA program have risen by 100% and there were 200 applications for this past summer’s AACA program. Thank you to all who have so wonderfully supported me for so long. I wish only continued success for the future of the festival. David Zinman
David Zinman’s international conducting course will be his first in Europe. The chief conductor of the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich established in his role as Artistic Director of the Aspen Music Festival the American Academy of Conducting at Aspen (USA). It is his wish to initiate a similar offshoot programme in Zurich. 159 conductors from all over the world have applied to take part in the «David Zinman International Masterclass». Zinman has chosen eight participants. They come from Argentina, Italy, Venezuela, Bulgaria, Rumania, Switzerland and the USA. The conductors, aged between 28 and 38, have attended master classes with other renowned conductors, and all have experience of conducting orchestras. For the participants of the International Conducting Course this invitation is an honour and a unique chance to work with David Zinman and the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich. The programme includes six demanding and varied works: Beethoven’s Symphony No 7, Schumann’ Symphony No 1, Tschaikowsky’s Symphony No 5, Strawinsky’s Firebird, Kodaly’s Dances of Galanta and Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin. The final concert will take place as a public lunchtime concert on 8 April 2010 in the Tonhalle Zurich. It is possible to attend the whole course as an auditor for CHF 50.– Applications should be before 31 March. David Zinman is jubilant following the recording of Mahler's Symphony No 10;
the last of the complete Mahler symphonies recorded with the Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich over a period of six years. And he has survived! 'Quite an ordeal for an old man', he says. Not that you would notice as he rushes off the next day to rehearsals at the Zurich Opera where, in March he will make his debut, conducting a new production of Offenbach's masterpiece, 'The Tales of Hoffmann'. Mahler's symphony No 8 is due for release this Spring. Next season a box set of the complete cycle will be available and in time for the 2010/11 Mahler celebrations.
David Zinman has been invited to take the orchestra to Leipzig in 2011.

For me, together with Mahler’s 6th symphony, the 10th is his most personal piece. This is a work written under tremendous stress, where the problems with his marriage were increasing and his health was failing.
